For an introduction to Māori pronunciation with video clips to help you learn, go to http://maorilanguage.net and click on ‘how to pronounce Māori’.
Every time you have to greet someone this week use a Māori greeting. By the end of the week see how many people are replying back in Māori.
Buy, borrow or source any available Māori language dictionaries. We suggest the English-Māori dictionary by H.M Ngata or a Modern Māori Picture Dictionary by Oxford Books. You can also access Māori dictionaries online from the ‘Kotahi Mano Kāika’ website, http://www.kmk.maori.nz/links/, or the Ngata Online dictionary at, http://www.learningmedia.co.nz/ngata/.
Go online www.maorilanguage.net then click on Phrase Drills, Greetings. Select a greeting and then watch the short clip provided to help you with the pronunciation.
Use your dictionary and find ten words for items in the kitchen. Make labels to stick to each item. Only use the Māori terms from now on. You can download labels from http://www.kmk.maori.nz/downloads/KaKupuKihiniFlashcards.pdf.
