When learning a second language it is important to immerse yourself in the language as much as possible. In Aotearoa that can be a challenge. Your job is to load up your mp3 or ipod full of Māori songs and/or movies. You will find a catalogue of available Māori music on http://www.maorimusic.com/catalog/default.php. Waiata can also be downloaded freely from the Kotahi Mano Kāika website, http://www.kmk.maori.nz/downloads/waiata.php. Even if you don’t know what the words mean you will have them in your head, and it will make it easier later on.
As you hang out your clothes to dry, or fold them once they are dry, test your knowledge by saying the name of each item of clothing in te reo.
  • For a reminder go to http://www.kmk.maori.nz/downloads/Weruweru_POSTER.pdf.
  • Research any words you don’t know in any of the Māori dictionaries available to you, or in one of the online dictionaries.
Go to the, ‘He Kupu o te Rā’ website, http://kupu.maori.nz/Default.aspx, and register to receive a new word every day.
  • Write the words in your notebook.
  • Write a funny sentence or statement for each new word.
  • Test yourself at the end of the week and see if you can remember them all.
Watch an episode of Māra Kai at 6.30pm Sundays on Māori Television or online at www.maoritelevision.com.
Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mu_Torere to learn the rules for Mu Tōrere and then go to http://38i.biz/mutorere/ to have a go at playing. Select the beginner level.
